PM addresses Company Secretaries at the inauguration of the golden jubilee year of ICSI

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today addressed Company Secretaries at the inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Year of ICSI – the Institute of Company Secretaries of India.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister congratulated all those associated with ICSI. He said he is happy to be among those who are responsible for ensuring that companies follow the law, and maintain their accounts properly. He said their work helps establish the country's corporate culture. Their advice has a bearing on the country's corporate governance, he added.


Government sets up a high-level committee for proper management of water resources in North-Eastern region .

The Centre has set up a high-level committee for proper management of water resources in the North-Eastern region. The Committee will be headed  by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar. It will facilitate optimising benefits of appropriate water management in the form of hydro-electric power, agriculture, bio-diversity conservation, reduced flood damage erosion, inland water transport, forestry, fishery and eco tourism. The committee is also tasked with spelling out actionable steps for optimizing water resources in the region and chalking out an action plan for dovetailing of Central schemes.


Cabinet approves the Extradition Treaty between India and Lithuania

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for the signing and ratification of the Extradition Treaty between India and Lithuania.
  • The Treaty would provide a legal framework for seeking extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals from and to Lithuania.
  • The Treaty would help in extradition of fugitive criminals including terrorists for criminal prosecutions from Lithuania who may have committed crimes against India. It will bring the criminals to justice, with a view to ensure peace and tranquility to public at large.

Cabinet apprised of the MoU between India and Switzerland on Technical Cooperation in Rail Sector

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding between Ministry of Railways, Government of India and the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications of Swiss Confederation on Technical Cooperation in Rail Sector.  The MoU was signed on on 31st August, 2017.

The MoU will enable technical cooperation in the following areas:-

  • Traction Rolling stock
  • EMU and train sets
  • Traction Propulsion Equipments
  • Freight and Passenger Cars
  • Tilting Trains
  • Railway Electrification Equipments
  • Train scheduling and operation improvement
  • Railway Station modernization
  • Multimodal transport
  • Tunneling technology

Background:

Ministry of Railways have signed MoUs for technical cooperation in the Rail sector with various foreign Governments and National Railways. The identified areas of cooperation include high-speed corridors, speed raising of existing routes, development of world-class stations, heavy haul operations and modernization of rail infrastructure, etc. The cooperation is achieved through exchange of information on developments in areas of railways technology & operations, knowledge sharing, technical visits, training & seminars and workshops in areas of mutual interest.

The MoUs provide a platform for Indian Railways to interact and share the latest developments and knowledge in the railway sector. The MoUs facilitate exchange of technical experts, reports and technical documents, training and seminars/workshops focusing on specific technology areas and other interactions for knowledge sharing.


Cabinet approves renaming of Kandla Port as Deendayal Port

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval to the renaming of Kandla Port as Deendayal Port.

Ports in India are generally named after the city or town in which these are situated.  However, the Government, in special cases, after due consideration, have renamed the Ports after great leaders in the past.

By renaming Kandla Port as "Deendayal Port, Kandla", a grateful nation would be remembering the invaluable contributions made by one of the greatest sons of India, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. This will inspire the People of Gujarat, particularly the Youth, who may not be fully aware of the contributions made by the great leader.


Tourism Minister Briefs Media Persons on ‘Paryatan Parv’ to be Oprganized Nationwide from 5th to 25th October, 2017

Shri Alphons Kannanthanam, Minister of State (Independent charge) for Tourism has said that the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India in collaboration with other Central Ministries, State Governments and Stakeholders is organizing a “Paryatan Parv” across the country from the 5th to 25th October 2017. Addressing media persons at a Press Conference here today, he said that programme is being organized with the objective of drawing focus on the benefits of tourism, showcasing the cultural diversity of the country and reinforcing the principle of “Tourism for All”. Smt. Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and senior officers were present un the Press Conference.

The Minister informed the media persons that the Paryatan Parv will have three main components:

  • Dekho Apna Desh :  To encourage Indians to visit their own country.
  • Tourism for All :  Tourism Events at sites across all States in the country.
  • Tourism & Governance :Interactive Sessions & Workshops with Stakeholders on varied themes

Turtle Sanctuary to be set up in Allahabad

In order to protect the rich aquatic biodiversity of river Ganga from escalating anthropogenic pressures, development of a Turtle sanctuary in Allahabad along with a River Biodiversity Park at Sangam have been approved under Namami Gange programme.

The project at an estimated cost of Rs 1.34 crore would include development of River Biodiversity Park at Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Sarasvati), establishment of a Turtle Rearing Centre (Permanent nursery at Triveni Pushp and makeshift annual hatcheries) and awareness about the importance of river Ganga and imperativeness of its conservation has been approved.

This project will provide much needed platform to make the visitors aware of their place in the ecosystem, their roles and responsibilities, improve their understanding of the complexity of co-existence with the environment and help generate awareness for reducing the impact of human activities on critical natural resources. The task of dissipating knowledge about river Ganga will be taken up ardently in this project, which is 100% centrally funded.

RBI ups inflation projection to 4.2-4.6% during second half

The Reserve Bank today raised its inflation projection to 4.2-4.6 per cent for the second half of the current fiscal due to firming global oil prices and uncertainty on kharif farm output.


RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 6%

  • The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), headed by Governor Urjit Patel, on Wednesday kept the repo rate – the key policy rate at which the RBI lends money to banks – unchanged at six per cent. This was broadly in line with expectations, given the concerns around inflation targeting.
  • Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF remains at 5.75 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 6.25 per cent.
  • The RBI reduced the gross value added (GVA) growth target for the current financial year to 6.7 per cent from 7.3 per cent earlier.

World Bank raises 2017, 2018 East Asia growth forecasts, sees geopolitical risks

  • The World Bank raised its economic growth forecasts for developing East Asia and Pacific for this year and 2018, but added the generally positive outlook was clouded by risks such as rising trade protectionism and geopolitical tensions.
  • The Washington-based lender now expects the developing East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region, which includes China, to grow 6.4 percent in 2017 and 6.2 percent in 2018.
  • Its previous forecast in April was for 6.2 percent growth in 2017 and 6.1 percent growth in 2018.

Scientists Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson win Nobel Prize for chemistry for development of cryo-electron microscopy.

  • Scientists Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for developing cryo-electron microscopy which simplifies and improves the imaging of biomolecules, the award-giving body said on Wednesday.
  • Chemistry is the third of this year's Nobel Prizes after the winners of the medicine and physics prizes were announced earlier this week.
  • The prizes are named after dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel and have been awarded since 1901 for achievements in science, literature and peace in accordance with his will.

British author Kazuo Ishiguro has won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature

British author Kazuo Ishiguro has won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature.  The novelist has written eight books, which have been translated into over 40 languages. His most famous novels "The Remains of the Day" and "Never Let Me Go" were adapted into highly acclaimed films. He was conferred the prestigious Order of British Empire in 1995.


Urvashi Sahni, founder of SHEF, wins social entrepreneur award

  • Urvashi Sahni, founder and chief executive of Study Hall Educational Foundation (SHEF), was awarded the Social Entrepreneur of the Year award 2017 for her work in educating India’s most disadvantaged girls.
  • She won the award, beating candidates from more prominent non-profit organizations including Akshaya Patra. Commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu presented the award to Sahni.
  • Jointly founded by Jubilant Bhartia Foundation and Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship in 2010, the award recognizes promising and high impact social entrepreneurs implementing practical and sustainable solutions.

Satya Pal Malik takes oath as Governor of Bihar

Former MP and BJP national vice-president Satya Pal Malik took oath as the Governor of Bihar on Wednesday. The post had fallen vacant in June after Ram Nath Kovind was nominated as candidate for President by the NDA government and subsequently resigned. West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi has been holding additional charge of Bihar since.


Rajnish Kumar appointed new SBI chairman

Rajnish Kumar, Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI), was appointed the next chairman of the largest public sector bank today.  He will succeed Arundhati Bhattacharya, who is at present serving her one-year extension, that ends on Friday.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Kumar for a period of three years from October 7, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
